Holiday reading log

Term 1 Holiday maths.

Problem solving
  1. Moana set her digital watch at 13:00:00 on the last day of April.
Unfortunately the watch loses 11 seconds a day.
What is the time on Moana’s watch when it is 13:00:00 on the last day of May?
There are 31 days in may. 31 x 11 = 341
If you convert 341 into minutes it would be 5 minutes and 41 seconds
Then subtract 5 mins and 41 secs from 13:00:00 which is….
12:54:19
2. In parking meters downtown, you can get 15 minutes parking for 50c.
Dad put $3.50 into the parking meter at 3.15pm.
5 o’clock
(7 groups of 50’s in 3.50)
15 x 7 = 105
105 is 1 hour and 45 mins
3.15 + 1 hour and 45 mins = 5.00pm
At what time did the parking meter expire?
3. There are four children in Marie's family.
She is less than 11 years old and is the oldest.
There's a two year age difference to twins, Grace and Lily, who come next.
Tom, who is older than 5 is two years younger than the twins.
How old are each of the children?
Marie - 10 years old.
Grace - 8 years old.
Lily - 8 years old.
Tom - 6 years old.

  1. Tim’s trip
It’s 7km from Tim’s house to where his Grandma lives.
It’s uphill on the way there so he can only cycle at 14kph but he can do
21kph on the way back.

Tim leaves his house at 6pm.
How long can he stop at his Grandma’s house if he wants
to be back home for his favourite TV programme at 7pm?

14km is an hour, but he is only travelling 7km which is half of
an hour (30 minutes) It takes him 30 minutes to get to Grandma's
house and the trip back home takes ⅓ of an hour (20 minutes). 30 + 20 = 50
minutes. He spends 10 minutes with his grandma which means he will miss his
tv show. (30 + 20 + 10 = 60 - 1 hour) So he’ll arrive back at home at 7:20pm.

2. The treasure map
Captain Blackheart buries his treasure but loses his treasure map! But
all is not lost. His trusty crew remember different bits of the map.
"I remember drawing it with 5 squares each way", says the Captain.
"There was a row of three trees running due East from the square (1,1)", Peg Leg
Pete says. "You put each one of them on a different square."
"Weren’t there four granite boulders going due South from (5,5)?" John asks.
"I think you put one of them each in a square too."
"Ah!. Now I remember!" yells the Captain. "I buried the treasure half way
between the first rock and the most western tree!"
Where is the treasure?

3. Lollies, lollies, lollies
On Monday, Sam, Sonny and Sylvia share some lollies that they've been given.
Sonny was given twice as many lollies as Sam.
Sylvia was given three times as many lollies as Sam.
They are given the same number of lollies each day up to (and including) Friday.
If Sylvia got a total of 18 lollies on Tuesday and Wednesday, how many lollies
did Sonny get for the whole five days?
How many lollies would Sam need to get on Saturday if he wanted to have
39 lollies altogether?
Sylvia has got a total of 18 lollies on Tuesday and Wednesday. That means
that she has got a total of 9 lollies each day. Sylvia gets 3x more that what
Sam gets so he gets 3 lollies a day. (93 = 3) Sony has 2x as much candy as sam
so she gets 6 lollies per day. (2 x 3 = 6)

In 5 days Sony would get 30 lollies (6 x 5 - 30) Sam gets 15 (3 x 5 = 15) and
needs 24 lollies on Saturday. (15 + 24 = 39)

One point for each correct answer

Measurement
1 km = 1000 m
3 metres = 3000 mm
1.5 tonnes = 1500 kg
13 hours = 46800 seconds
2 years = 730 days
1.25 litres = 1250 ML
1 leap year = 366 days
2 fortnights = 22 days
1 week = (24 x 7) = 168 hours

Numeracy
How many hundredths in 3.5?
Answer = 350
How many tenths in 89?
Answer = 80
How many thousandths in 2.4?
Answer = 0
7.33 + 0.98 = 831
.89 - .7 = 0.19
3.23 - 1.65 = 158
8.54 - 2.79 = 575
.5 X 6 = 3
.8 X 3 = 2.4
¾ of 120 = (30 x 4 = 60 x 2 = 120) = 30
5/7 of 350 = 250
⅔ of 180 = 120.

Recounts are awesome. Your experiences can be told in words to
capture your readers
and take them on a journey with you.
Task - Write a recount about the worst birthday you have ever had

My worst birthday would have to be when we only had
one thing to eat. We only had one tiny little snack box from
KFC. it was yum. But what I hated about was the fact that we
did not even have a birthday cake, What's a birthday without a
birthday cake and it doesn’t end there, we, like about had six frozen
coke but then it spilled so we had to start the birthday after they
came back from getting frozen, it was so…. Long. Finally they
came and I was starving. We finally started the birthday and enjoy
the rest of it, but it was still the worst birthday that me and my my brother
has ever had. Hopefully, this year my birthday would be much better.

Speech writing is a very valuable skill. When you have the ability to
write speeches you can argue your way through your words. Lawyers
do that all the time.
Task - Write a one minute speech about one of these topics
  • Teachers should be paid more money
I think they should be paid more, because they don’t come here
for nothing. Teachers work hard to setup the day for their classes,
and it’s a lot of work to do. They take care of us for at least six hours.
Teachers should be paid more because they need it for their families.
Teachers have a life outside of their work. Teachers need the money to
either buy for their kids, or buy more school supplies, for the students.
  • We should have a Mcdonalds restaurant at every school
Having Mcdonald's restaurants at school would be a really bad idea
because if their parents buy their kids food, they wouldn’t even bother
to eat it. They would waste it and throw in the ground. Also it would be
a big distraction to the students because they wouldn’t do their work,
they would just think about the Mcdonald’s and wait for the bell to ring.
That is why I think Mcdonald’s should not be added to schools.
  • Driving skills should be taught at primary school
Driving at school, that is a obviously a bad idea, I mean it should be
taught at a driving school, like teaching kids to drive it’s legal right.
It's a good thing they could be taught to drive but Maybe when
they are at least 18 years old or even 20 years old. They eventually
will learn when they are older. That is a why a disagree with driving
skills being taught to young ones.
  • Glenbrae School should have no uniform
I, disagree because we need to represent our school, when we
are lost we would be able to noticed if they are from our school,
but like their are different schools they look like our school but we
still have to wear uniform. Uniform, will make those who don’t show,
who don’t speak up, be recognized .
  • Every student should have a free day off school each week

I Disagree because students must come to school in order
to learn and get a perfect attendance, you can get a Certificate
for perfect attendance, in case you don’t get a end of the year certificate.
